The Beautiful Game,
Unbeautiful

They draped the dawn in silk at the Baur au Lac —

Swiss boots on marble, cuffs on men who sold the map.

Forty-seven counts, fourteen suits, a twenty-four-year snare:

one hundred fifty million dollars whispering through the air.

Jack Warner, Webb, the kings of the corridor deal —

while the world watched free kicks, they auctioned the real.

Sepp wore the crown like a permanent loan,

won the vote, then watched the throne turn to stone.

From absolute monarch to exile in days —

the empire of handshakes, exposed in the blaze.

The congress still clapped as the sirens drew near;

the beautiful game had a very ugly ear.

Then sand, and gold, and a winter that shouldn't exist —

a desert bought the Cup with a boardroom fist.

Six thousand five hundred names in the concrete and heat,

ghosts in the scaffolding under the elite.

They banned the armband, they polished the brand,

while the pitch stayed green on a foundation of sand.

Now presidents whisper across the white line —

a red card erased like a diplomatic fine.

The electronic eye, the VAR, the "truth" on a screen,

accused of blessing the bankable dream.

Tickets like ransom, monopoly's grin —

the spectacle shines while the shadows dig in.

So raise a glass to the kickoff, the anthem, the roar —

and toast the men who counted the cash at the door.

The ball still rolls. The crowd still believes.

But under the floodlights, the ledger still grieves:

for every goal that history will claim,

someone, somewhere, sold the beautiful game.
